Antelope were once a staple food on the prairie. Like the buffalo, great herds once roamed the landscape, but the entire population of the second fastest animal in the world that had evolved in North America for over 20 million years was nearly hunted to extinction by humans during the 1800’s.

Dustin Twiss is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and lives with his family near Buffalo Gap, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. His art is inspired by the natural patterns and colors found in the Fairburn Agate, South Dakota’s state gemstone. Each image is a hand-drawn tribute to his Lakota heritage and the landscapes, skies, wildlife, spirit and history of Black Hills and Great Plains of the West.
